The Beautiful Coastal Town of Fort Bragg, CA

28 Apr

I’ve been to Fort Bragg, California several times and it always brings back happy memories when I think of being there. It has spectacular views of the ocean and driving down State Route 1 you can pull off the road just about anywhere and walk right on the beach. Last time we went there we stayed at this campsite with views of the ocean. We took walks from our campsite right to the ocean and just watched the waves. There’s something therapeutic about listening to the waves of the ocean.

My adventures at Glass Beach

My most favorite place of all was the Glass Beach. I collect colored glass so I felt like it was a special treat to be able to visit this cool site. It’s called Glass Beach because in the early 20th century it was common practice to throw the town’s trash into the ocean. It sounds ludicrous now, but I guess they didn’t think it would cause much harm. It wasn’t until the 1960s that the North Coast Water Quality Board stepped in and prevented further dumping into the ocean.

Unlike it is today, lots of products made during the dumping was made with glass rather than plastic. In that particular area, the rocks on that beach were formed in a way that tumbled the glass every time the waves came in and therefore smoothed and polished the glass. So you can walk on the beach and pick up smooth glass pieces. Now people from all over come to this beach and pick through the glass and collect it.

There are several glass beaches in the world. Have you been to one? Tell me about it!

Thank you for reading!
